What Does Giuliani Offer?

Posted by Matthew Kilburn on March 4, 2007

What is making Rudy Giuliani such an appealing candidate to even Conservative voters? As I’ve said before, I believe Rudy Giuliani is still on his “Honeymoon period”, although that may be drawing to an end, fortunately. He seems to still be enjoying his “America’s Mayor” momentum, and while he certainly did well after 9/11, Giuliani is not the man to lead America as President.

People who think they want to vote for Giuliani should remember that terrorism and security is not going to be the only issue over the next eight years. There are other issues too, like the deficit, spending, taxes, marriage, and abortion. Giuliani may make a good war leader, although I don’t believe he has any real military experience, but on other issues that will be important in America, he is less than desirable. He is pro-abortion, anti-gun, pro-homosexual marriage, and, under his leadership, the debt of the city of New York did nothing but increase. I would also point out that, while he says that he would appoint conservative judges, his record of judicial appointments as Mayor showed that he appointed Democrats (including liberals) at a number eight times higher than he appointed Republicans. Do we really want a Republican Nominee who calls Roe v. Wade “well decided law”?

Another thing, a lot of Giuliani’s support seems to come from “electability”, many people believe the Giuliani is the candidate who is most able to beat the Democrats. This, in my opinion, is false. When you want to win an election, you pick a strong candidate who represents your values and opinions, and who can give those opinions and values a good appeal for moderates.

If Conservatives and Republicans think that electability is the way to go, I advise them to look at what happened to John Kerry, he was thought to be very electable, but he ended up loosing to Bush by a considerable margin.

The way to win the election is by choosing a strong, conservative candidate who will represent over views and attract moderates to support our side. Rudy Giuliani does not fulfil that description.
