One of the things that really attracts me to Mitt Romney is that he is extremely light on the usual political rhetoric that we see with candiates like Hillary Clinton and, to a lesser extent, Rudy Giuliani. Romney is running what I would call a Policy-Based Campaign. While he does occasionally revert to politics when talking about things like the Iraq War bills that Congress is trying to pass, but for the most part, he avoids partisan cheap shots.
Romney focuses on a “this is the problem, this is my plan to fix it” approach. We have seen this particularly when it comes to his plan to combat the deficit, promising to cap non-defense spending at inflation -1%. This willingness to form and reveal plans is a good sign. He knows what he needs to do, he knows what he wants to do, and he knows how to do it. If all candidates ran campaigns like this, the American people might not feel so alienated and annoyed by politics. When it comes down to the votes, this Policy-Based campaigning is going to help Romney.
