The closest debate of the Republican Primary so far is over – and it came and went without any clear winner. Most of the candidates had strong moments, with Giuliani touting his crime-fighting skills, McCain touting Iraq progress, and Romney coming down hard on Giuliani and McCain’s immigration positions.
At the end of the night, however, I don’t think any candidate came away able to claim a run-away victory. I just don’t see any major changes to the race stemming from this debate. When it comes down to it, I think those who walked in supporting Romney walked out supporting Romney, and those who walked in supporting Giuliani walked out supporting Giuliani, and so on. Unlike the past debates, there is simply no easy answer as to who won the debate, or even as to who got the best one-liner. I also think that this extremely close debate could be a sign of things to come – at least until the field starts to thin out.
