hat tip: Rasmussen Reports
A recent proposal by Hillary Clinton would have given every child born in the United States $5,000 at birth – money that could have put into a savings bond available to the child once they turn 18 to buy a house, start a business, or attend school. Apparently, voters don’t like the idea as much as Hillary does – Rasmussen has them rejecting the proposal by a 2-1 margin.
So, why is the idea so unpopular? I don’t know for sure, but I would guess that voters don’t like the idea of another big-government, liberal entitlement program that would make people increasingly dependent on handouts. Obviously, Hillary is going to have to tweak her proposal if she wants it to pass. One option that might might be more popular would be to allow parents to save more money tax-free after the birth of a child.
