For the second time in less than 24 hours, I have had to come onto my site to deliver bad news to my readers. First, Ernie Fletcher lost his re-election bid in Kentucky. Now, Mitt Romney has lost a major Conservative Evangelical to none other than Rudy Giuliani. The endorsement comes from Pat Robertson – the influential, though controversial, Christian leader. From Yahoo!:
“WASHINGTON – Televangelist Pat Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition, endorsed Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani on Wednesday.
“It is my pleasure to announce my support for America’s Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, a proven leader who is not afraid of what lies ahead and who will cast a hopeful vision for all Americans,” Robertson said during a news conference with Giuliani in Washington.”
There is still no clear answer as to how big of an effect this endorsement will have, since Robertson IS a big name, but many of his followers are less than pleased with his choice. I think the only clear effect is that Romney will not be getting one of the biggest Evangelical Conservative names into his camp. We will see what happens. It would have been nice for Romney to pick up Robertson’s support. Controversial or not, it would have given him a huge base of support among influential Evangelicals.
As always, comments are welcome.
