If you’ve watched the news at all over the last couple days, chances are that you’ve seen the story about John McCain inviting three other high-profile Republicans to his AZ home for a “barbecue”. Mitt Romney, Bobby Jindal, and Charlie Crist were all invited, as was Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty. Only Pawlenty declined, and that was because of a scheduling conflict. The McCain camp is trying to make it sound like its just a friendly meeting, though some in the media are speculating that its actually a big part of the Veep search – possibly the final three. And I think the media has it right.
Any list of close McCain friends probably doesn’t include Mitt Romney, nor does a list of current Republican governors. Huckabee was not invited, and nor was Giuliani, so it isn’t a gathering of former candidates. In reality, the only reasonable explanation for this group is that it is part of the search for a VP, so I don’t know who McCain is trying to fool by calling it anything else.
